As part of our Summer Wellness series, a few people asked for an actual recipe for what we lovingly call “Itchy Bite stuff” in our house! So, here are two of our favorite methods of quelling itchy spots like mosquito bites.
*** Remember, these are my family’s favorite methods – be sure to make sure these ingredients work for your people and are used at dilutions that you feel safe with. ***
essential oil roller
In a 10 mL roller bottle combine:
5-10 drops lavender essential oil
5-10 drops copaiba essential oil
Fill with carrier oil of choice.
Roll onto bites as needed.
10 drops EO TOTAL is approximately 5% dilution
20 drops EO TOTAL is approximately 10% dilution
Clay pack
1 tablespoon bentonite clay
2 drops lavender essential oil
2-3 tablespoons water
Combine all ingredients to form paste. Apply thin layer to bites and let dry. May rinse off once dry or let naturally flake off. Cover and refrigerate remaining paste for other bites or reapplication.
We also love to make our own bug spray! We keep a small spray bottle near the back door to help prevent itchy bites – here’s a quick recipe for that!
In a small spray bottle combine:
- ½ teaspoon vegetable glycerin
- 3 oz witch hazel (can use vodka in a pinch – but, hey, this is a family practice, ha!)
- 20 drops Young Living Purification essential oil blend
- 10 drops citronella essential oil
- 10 drops tea tree essential oil
- 4 oz distilled water (fill to top of bottle) (um, for the sake of being 1000% transparent and Dr. Jamie, I’m going to be REALLY honest and tell you that I sometimes have used filtered water from my fridge here)
Combine it all and (this is IMPORTANT, people) tighten the lid. Tight? Good. Now shake the heck out of it to combine everything well. Give it one more shake for good measure and spray your exposed skin – rub it in if you feel like it, but if you’re in a house like mine, your tiny humans have already run off and there’s zero rubbing happening.
If you’re not feeling making these on your own, give us a shout! I’m happy to make some for you – an itchy bite stuff roller bottle will set you back a whole $10, but you’ve got to come in and give me a hug with that!
Enjoy these crazy hot fun days, y’all!
